Meet a Jane: Renee Wood

Posted on June 17, 2009 - Filed Under A Day in the Life of an Entrepreneur, Meet a Jane, Which Jane Are You?

The Comfort Company was founded by Renee Wood, a social worker with a mission to simplify the difficult process of expressing sympathy. The Comfort Company specializes in the development and sale of non-traditional sympathy gifts currently offers over 300 specially selected or custom designed gifts to honor the loss of a loved one and gained national exposure after being featured on The Oprah Winfrey Show. She designed her first piece of memorial jewelry after the unexpected death of her sister-in-law’s father. Unable to find a gift that expressed her feelings, Renee sketched a teardrop shaped pendant with a forget-me-not flower embedded in the design. She then had the pendant manufactured and penned a verse to go along with it. Late one night, while on the phone with her sister-in-law, the name of a business – The Comfort Company – was created.

As a former hospital social worker and member of the medical team present when a patient was removed from life support, Renee was intentional about asking the bereaved “How can we best comfort you in your grief.” The overwhelming answer she received was, “Acknowledge my loss and don’t try to minimize it.” Renee has taken the Which Jane Are You? assessment and she says she is absolutely an Accidental Jane and it fits her to a tee, as “I never really dreamed of starting my own business and didn’t realize that I was even starting a business when this venture first began. I was simply creating a solution to a problem that I was having.”

reneewoodRenee believes there are so many rewards of being a woman business owner including, “a way to continue my social work career, yet granting me the privilege of working around a chaotic family life. Probably the greatest reward is being a role model for my four daughters. I love that they have witnessed this journey from its inception and have seen the bumps in the road as well as the rewards. I do believe that by watching me grow this business, they have been exposed to the endless possibilities for their own lives.”
