Brainstorming, Boating, and Building a Business

Last weekend, our Advisory Board (Sue Reninger, Michele PW, MaryPat Kavanaugh, Laura Donnell and I), met to discuss future plans for Jane Out of the Box.  It was an incredible few days in sunny Florida and I felt very grateful to have this extraordinary group of women entrepreneurs participating in lively discussion and setting strategy.

Everyone stayed at a nearby hotel, but we actually held the meeting around my dining room table.  There were Post-It Flip Chart pages all over the walls from the fantastic brainstorming we did!

As the meeting continued, we all realized that one of the really special things about being a woman, and a business owner specifically, is just how much you can learn from each other “sitting around a kitchen table”.  Our ice breaker to kick off the meeting was to share “why you started your business”.  Although our backgrounds are diverse, we live scattered all over the country, and we each have different areas of expertise, we found we really could relate to each other’s stories.  And that is one of the things Jane Out of the Box is all about ….. understanding the stories of female entrepreneurs and bringing that those stories to life with great research that helps all of us build the businesses of our dreams.

Lest you think all we did was work, rest assured we found some fun time too …. we had dinner and drinks Friday night, followed by an evening cruise on our boat, with my wonderful husband, Rob, at the helm.

Some of us went for a run on Saturday morning and after meetings Saturday and dropping Michele PW at the airport, Laura, Sue & I went for dinner and drinks at Blue Martini, and shopping at International Plaza mall in Tampa.

Surely one of the great rewards of being in business for yourself is the chance to work and play with friends.  When was the last time you mixed business and fun …. and isn’t it about time to do it again?
