When you think of “female entrepreneurs,” who do you think of?  When I ask this question from the stage, the common answers I get are “Oprah,” “Martha Stewart,” and then ….. silence!

These are two big name entrepreneurs, but there are millions of other women business owners actively seeking to build the businesses and the lifestyles of their dreams – and who are their role models?

The truth is, we have an opportunity to be role models for each other.  To learn from each others’ strengths.  To understand each others’ challenges.  And to take this knowledge to propel ourselves and our businesses forward – enabling us to create a better world for ourselves, for our loved ones, for everyone.  (Because that’s what I believe women entrepreneurs have the power to do – by changing the face of business, by leading the way for other women, we can change the world.)

That’s why I have interviewed and researched THOUSANDS of female business owners over the past several years – some who have been successful and others haven’t.  I want to bring their challenges and their wisdom out into the light so we can ALL benefit, learn from each other, and leap forward in creating the businesses we deserve. 

Along the way, I’ve learned what it takes to actually SUCCEED in business – no matter where you are now.  I’ve learned from over 3,500 women sharing their stories – and I’ve learned from my own experiences.  And, no, you don’t have to be Oprah or Martha to do it.

I want to share what I’ve learned with you.

Who am I and why should you listen to me?

I’m Michele DeKinder-Smith, and as the Founder and CEO of Jane Out of the Box www.JaneOutOfTheBox.com, it’s my passion in life to help women like you – business owners – succeed. Jane Out of the Box is an online resource dedicated to the women entrepreneur community. Based on several years’ worth of research – during which we’ve interviewed more than 3,500 female entrepreneurs – Jane Out of the Box provides varied information, including articles, helpful links and a free assessment for business owners to determine their entrepreneurial type (and therefore their strengths and challenges). My first business, Linkage Research and Consulting (more on that later), made close to $2 million in revenue in 2009, while requiring fewer than 40 hours of my time in a typical week.

I’m not telling you all this to make myself sound super-successful. In fact, before I figured out how to make my business work for me, I had $100,000 in credit card debt from my business. I had to sell my house, and I was seriously questioning my own skills and abilities.  I’m sharing the truth of how it was for me, because I want you to know that I completely understand what you’re going through now. I understand the passion behind your dream. I understand what it means to take risks in order to create the life and income you want for yourself.  And I understand that too many of us are having to reinvent the wheel as we seek to figure out what works and what doesn’t.
