Meet a Jane: Karin Arden
Posted on July 15, 2009 - Filed Under Jane Thoughts, Meet a Jane, Which Jane Are You?
After 26 years in advertising, marketing, public relations and event planning, and also experiencing 9/11’s impact on businesses and marketing budget allocations, Karin Arden and her business partner realized there was a huge opportunity to support small to medium size businesses that couldn’t afford the big agencies and the fees associated with their services. From that, JFD Advertising & Public Relations at www.jfdadvertising.com was created with a unique and distinctive business plan – fitting the team to the client, the campaign to the marketing objectives.
Karin has experienced numerous rewards from owning her own business, and she has found that “always being honest and forthright with clients, vendors and employees is the best approach to business. I appreciate their thanks for our candor, caring and concern about doing the best thing to accomplish their goals…it’s nice for a client to say ‘thank you’ for our efforts. It’s something you usually don’t hear much or often. Seeing results that far surpass what was expected is also quite rewarding, and usually results in more work.”
Karin took the Which Jane Are You? assessment and discovered that she is a Merry Jane. Her agency was created because a need was identified in the marketplace and she and her partners desired to be more accessible to their families. “We learned the right processes and means to implement results oriented marketing, and thought we could share that knowledge with others under our own terms and timeframe. JFD is virtually a 24-7 business and can be executed from anywhere, “says, Karen. “This is a win-win for our clients and our families that need us to be there to help whenever needed.”
For other Merry Janes, Karin believes that the smartest and best business advice she has ever received came from one of her past employers – a dear friend – who told her “the easiest thing an agency or business professional can do is give a client what he wants. The smartest thing, and sometimes the hardest, thing to do is to give a client what he needs.”
Karin believes that she has been several other Jane Types in the past:
- Jane Dough – “I have found the right work/life balance for myself that suits my family’s needs as well. Definitely focused on growing the business so we can later sell it at a substantial profit.”
- Go Jane Go – “Sometimes have trouble saying ‘no’ to others since I’m always looking to help others professionally or personally.”
- Tenacity Jane – “Cash flow is always a concern, and am very passionate about the business and quite determined to make the business a success.”
- Accidental Jane – “Never thought I’d have my own business since I always thought I’d work or a large corporation as a DM or CMO, but found a niche in my industry that we just had to fill. Not sure if I could ever turn back now that I work for myself.”
