Meet a Jane Kris Havlicek

Kris Havlicek started Kustom by Kris (http://kustombykris.com/2010/ ), a graphic arts and web design studio, in 2003. Kris works with a range of clients from established businesses brand new start-ups. From the small mom-owned shop to a large franchise, Kris creates or preserves her clients’ professional image on fliers, posters, advertisements, Internet ads, and more.
Kris started her own company when she decided to become a stay-at-home-mom. “I started my own business because I was pregnant with my second child and had my hands full with my oldest son who has special needs,” said Kris. “Unfortunately, I’m not a person who can just sit around. I needed to be busy. After experimenting in a few creative directions, I decided web design was the career for me. I dove in head-first and learned all I could. My taste and talent has developed into what you see today – a hip and unique print design firm. I operate out of Dubuque, Iowa, but my services are available worldwide. I don’t have set working hours. I work around my family. I love my ‘j-o-b,’ so I actually work quite a bit.”
What does Kris consider the greatest rewards for owning her own business? “I secretly love the satisfaction I feel when my client presents a Kustom by Kris designed business card to their new client who says, ‘Nice business card!’ That is a step in the direction of success for both of us. I also love the flexibility. It is wonderful to be able to work around my family and be here when they need me.”
After taking the free Which Jane Are You? assessment at www.JaneOutoftheBox.com , Kris discovered that she is a Jane Dough. “Being a Jane Dough is very fitting. I eat, breathe, and sleep graphic design. I love marketing my business to whoever will listen and am always thinking of ways to make it better. My dream is to have a much larger business that offers even more services (graphic designing and printing just scratches the surface) and employment opportunities for others. My focus is to continue having fun while steadily moving toward overall success. I would say that I have been a Jane Dough throughout building my business. I have always been driven to be my own person, provide for my family, and strive for ultimate control over my environment.”
Here are Kris’ “top three” hints to help her fellow Jane Doughs succeed:
1) Be as prepared as you can
2) Do research and don’t cut yourself short
3) Validate yourself – don’t look for it in those around you
