Debra Condren, Ph.D., is an author; business psychologist, and owner of www.AmbitionIsNotADirtyWord.com and www.ManhattanBusinessCoaching.com
Debra’s life’s mission has been to encourage women to make the contribution they were born to make and to fight the prevailing cultural paradigm: ambitious men are go-getters; ambitious women are the b-word.
Debra started her own business at the age of 32 while going through a divorce and learning how to be a single working mom. Her career was on track, she had received her Ph.D., yet she found herself “yearning to sunbathe in a different kind of light…I decided I wanted to start my own career consulting firm.” She wanted flexibility so that she could wrap her work schedule around her child’s schedule.
She discovered a mentoring program for women in San Francisco where she recognized her talents, and yet began to identify how ambitious women hold themselves back. This provided the genesis for the Women’s Business Alliance, an organization she founded that has served as a motivational think tank for 3,000 women over thirteen years. Debra asserts that, “The world deserves to hear from us. This is the greatest blessing I’ve received…helping other women use their talents and stay true to their own dreams with integrity, and without sacrificing a full, meaningful personal life or their other sacrosanct priorities, including being great moms, partners, wives, and community members.”
Debra interviewed 500 women for her bestselling book, Ambition Is Not A Dirty Word: A Woman’s Guide to Earning Her Worth and Achieving Her Dreams. For Jane Out of the Box readers who buy a copy of her book, Debra offers a complimentary half-hour career or executive or small business telephone coaching session (with proof of purchase through Amazon.com).
Debra says she is “definitely” a Jane Dough, after taking the assessment twice. She says that, “Work feels like play…Being a Jane Dough also allows me to be as ambitious as I want to be while being the kind of mom I want to be. For me, being a Jane Dough was the answer–and fits both my professional and maternal personalities.
I continue my work as a business psychologist, career and executive coach, small business adviser, and speaker, loving the opportunity to chart my own career destiny, be as ambitious as I want to be, love my work with a grand passion, and make the contribution I want to make–and earn my worth while doing work that is so much fun. I continue to have grand goals and plan on working for a long time.”
